Stud Services and Sow Care
There are a lot of great pig breeds out there, with tasty meat and lard, great foraging ability, and docile temperaments. Indeed, the arguments for heritage breeds range further, to maternal instincts and robust immune systems. We think the Meishan covers all these bases better than any other single breed, though surely opinions will vary, as they always do on agricultural matters.
However, there is one thing the Meishan does better than any other pig, and that's fertility. We're not just looking at apocryphal pictures from China anymore. The genetic research is in, and American breeders are logging record litter sizes that keep rising.
Folks, if we aren't breeding these pigs, we're missing out on some of the magic.
That said, it's easier said than done. Meishan farming may swap out all the pig-violence-related problems for pig-sex-related problems, but having a sow in heat tear through three fences to get to a boar is still inconvenient, to say the least.
Our vision here is that our friends and neighbors can buy a gilt from us, maybe a feeder or two to keep her company while she's growing out, then drop her off at ours once a year to get bred to our fancy bicoastal boars. You end up saying grace on roughly 15 piglets a year, and we get to kick off all the piggy pregnancies with the benefits of all our high-concept regenerative agriculture nerd farming stuff that's honestly beyond what most sane people want to mess with.
This isn't really a product; it's a conversation and a relationship. We've mention it because we've had some very keen takers. If you're interested, drop us a line.
